The Best of Tasmania in 7 Super Days Itinerary

Our first wilderness experience begins in Mount Field National Park where we’ll walk amongst some of the world’s tallest trees and the cascading Russell Falls. Continuing west we will visit Australia’s deepest freshwater lake, Lake St Clair, before traversing the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Here we’ll enjoy some short walks along the tannin-coloured waters of the Franklin River and Nelson Falls. You’ll learn about Tasmania’s mining history in Queenstown before arriving in the harbourside village of Strahan where we’ll spend the next two nights.

Discover the West Coast’s wild and rugged coastlines and rainforests. Walk to Tasmania’s highest waterfall, Montezuma Falls, within the ancient rainforests of the Tarkine/takayna. At the coast we’ll explore the immense Henty Sand Dunes and walk along Tasmania’s longest stretch of sand at Ocean Beach. Or today you can choose an outstanding nature cruise on the beautiful Gordon River (own cost). Strahan is also a terrific place to look for platypus with the help of your guide.

Cradle Mountain National Park is a highlight of Tasmania. Discover Cradle’s alpine and glacial-carved wilderness as you look for wombats, echidna, and other Tasmanian wildlife. Choose from a variety of world-class walks, such as the track to the summit of Marion’s Lookout, the Dove Lake circuit, or stroll to the Boatshed. After our time enjoying the park, we’ll drive to the city of Launceston in northern Tasmania via the colourful town of Sheffield, also known as the Town of Murals.

Visit Launceston’s stunning Cataract Gorge which is a terrific place to spot wallabies. We’ll drive to the East Coast and enjoy lunch in the fishing township of St Helens before taking our time to explore the Bay of Fires/larapuna. Clear waters, white sands and orange boulders are classic scenes from the Bay of Fires region, and you’ll love strolling along these pristine beaches. Our final destination is the charming coastal town of Bicheno, home of the little penguin.You may wish to wander down to the blowhole or to the lookout for views over the Tasman Sea.

Freycinet National Park is a beautiful peninsula on Tasmania’s East Coast. Freycinet’s beaches, coastal forests and pink granite mountains make this an exciting nature-based destination. You can hike to the lookout of the famous Wineglass Bay or continue down to the beach and walk along the shore. Or you can choose a challenging climb to the summit of Mt Amos or take a relaxing coastal walk. We also visit the lighthouse at Cape Tourville for wild ocean views across the Tasman Sea before travelling back to Hobart/nipaluna along the Great Eastern Drive.

Wander down to the geological wonder of the Tessellated Pavement and explore other parts of the magnificent Tasman Peninsula such as Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen which form part of the Tasman National Park.  See Tasmanian devils and other wildlife at a nature sanctuary, before visiting the open-air museum of Port Arthur Historic Site. Explore the vast gardens and convict buildings in what is known as the best convict historic settlement in Australia and a World Heritage Site. We’ll return to Hobart via the colonial village of Richmond, where our journey comes to an end approx 5.30pm
